National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Why Inclusive Jobs Matter
Every October, we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). This month reminds us how important it is for people with disabilities to have the chance to work and be part of their communities.

Having a job is about more than earning money. Work gives people pride, purpose, and independence. It helps everyone feel like they belong. When people with disabilities can find good jobs that fit their skills and goals, our whole community becomes stronger, more creative, and more welcoming.

“Everyone deserves the chance to choose work they enjoy,” said Jordan Squiers, The Arc of Buffalo County’s Board President. “When businesses hire people with disabilities, they gain new ideas, loyal workers, and a better understanding of their customers and community.”

Even though things have improved over the years, many people with disabilities still face challenges finding or keeping jobs. Some of these barriers include unfair attitudes, lack of access, or workplaces that aren’t designed for everyone. This month is a reminder to keep breaking down those barriers.

Employers can make a big difference by making sure workplaces are accessible, hiring fairly, and giving everyone a chance to succeed. When people with disabilities are included at work, they can earn a living, support their families, and take part in the community just like anyone else.

Let’s use National Disability Employment Awareness Month to celebrate what people with disabilities bring to the workforce and to build a future where everyone can work, grow, and be valued for who they are.
